Egyptian history dates back more than 4000 years ago. The Peak of the Egyptians empire was in the 16 and 13th Century BC. Egypt fell to Persia, Alexander the Great, and Ptolemies in later years. The last ruler was Cleopatra when it became part of the Roman, Empire. The Arab caliphs ruled Egypt from 641 to 1517. In the 18th and 19th Centuries the Turks, British and French were in control at various times. Britain was forced to grant Egypt Independence in 1922 under pressure from Egyptian nationalism. The army deposed King Farouk in 1952 and Egypt became a republic the following year.

There are a number of languages spoken in Egypt, but Egyptian Arabic (Maṣri) is by far the most widely spoken in the country. The official language of Egypt is Standard Arabic and is used in most written media. Egyptian Arabic is the national and spoken language, and is occasionally written. English and French are also widely spoken and used in business and educated circles.
