ALTA 2005 Conference Report

The ALTA conference, whose theme was 'African Languages at Home and Abroad: New Realities, New Communities, New Priorities', was held at Yale University from March 17-20, 2005. The NALRC was represented at the conference by Venkatesh Jankiraman and Pauline Gichiru. The NALRC also had a table display that exhibited, in addition to the regular items, the newly released 'Let’s Speak Amharic' text book and the new Kinya-rwanda, Somali and Luganda brochures, much to the delight of many conference attendees.

The conference was attended by approximately 55 people from various universities, some from as far as Africa. On the third day, the NALRC was represented by Pauline Gichiru at the Cooperation in African Language Teaching Panel, where she outlined the latest projects that the NALRC was currently undertaking. She also answered questions from the panelists about the NALRC projects that they were not familiar with or projects that were not clear to them. The conference ended on a high note with a dinner and dance hosted on behalf of all conference attendees. Ben Elugbe from the University of Ibadan-Nigeria, Kimani Njogu from Kenyatta University-Kenya, and Nhlanhla Thwala from the University of Witwatersrand-South Africa gave the farewell remarks. The conference participants left at their leisure the following day.
