ASA 2013 Conference Report
The 56th Annual African Studies Association (ASA) was held from November 21-24, 2013 in Baltimore, Maryland. The theme of the conference was “Mobility, Migration and Flows.” The National African Language Resource Center (NALRC) was represented by Kwesi Brown.
Most visitors picked up the language brochures of their interest; some collected bundles of them to introduce the languages to students at their universities. Many language instructors appreciated the efforts of the NALRC to promote African languages. The exhibitors encouraged those language instructors who are interested in developing language materials for African languages or those who can suggest other people for the task to contact NALRC.
At the conference, NALRC displayed its publications and materials including various African language textbooks, multimedia materials, different African language brochures, annual newsletters and NCOLCTL and ALTA 2014 conference posters. The NALRC’s efforts in making language resources available to the language scholars in the United States were highly commended by the visitors. Some of the participants declared their intention to help in publishing more brochures and textbooks that are not yet available.
The Title VI African Studies Center Directors’ meeting and the African Language Coordinators’ meetings were attended by the NALRC representative on behalf of the NALRC Director. Some of the highlights of the NALRC’s report at the conference included its annual professional development program and materials produced by the center. The meeting concluded with the appreciation of NALRC’s initiatives and efforts in the field of African language pedagogy. The 57th annual conference is slated for November 20- 23, 2014.
