Post-Program Network for Program Excellence Meeting: October 16, - 18, 2009.

Professor Antonia Schleicher and Modupe Olubiyi attended the STARTALK meeting in Chicago.

At that meeting, we elaborated on the following points:

  • Validation of the work and success of all  STARTALK participants Reinforcement of the continuous improvement model
  • Building and enhancement of STARTALK community of practice
  • Enhancement of the  understanding of key STARTALK principles and practices
  • Sharing of information pertinent to the future of STARTALK

The meeting was graced with the presence of representatives from the two agencies that fund and oversee STARTALK and who have been instrumental in overcoming many obstacles on behalf of STARTALK. They were given the opportunity to speak to the attendees of the meeting. The first was Rusty Shughart from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, followed by Greg Newby from the NSA.

Ed McDermott from the Department of Education and various Title VI/Fulbright Hays programs was also recognized for his representation of the National Security Language Initiative (NSEP), with its flagship and pipeline programs.The representative from NSLIY, the study abroad program run by the State Department, could not make it to the meeting due to other engagements.

Team Leaders and Site Visitors for summer 2009 were recognized for their efforts in crisscrossing the country on behalf of STARTALK and their efforts in connecting STARTALK Central to various programs and in helping STARTALK understand what is happening out in the field. They have provided a lot of guidance on what programs need and have helped STARTALK to stay in touch in ways that they could never do otherwise.

The STARTALK Central staff made a lot of effort in making our stay an enjoyable one with their excellent personal relationship styles and other services they provided for our comfort.
