STARTALK Professional Development Program

The IU LCTL STARTALK Professional Development Program is a three - week program for prospective and new teachers of one or more Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) at the K-16 level; these languages include Arabic, Dari, Hindi, Korean, Persian Swahili, Turkish, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, and Urdu.

There are two parts to this program:

  1. One week of distance learning through an Online Teaching Methods Course for LCTLs development by the UW-Madison Language Institute and NCOLCTL.
  2. Two weeks of residential face-to-face instruction in Bloomington, Indiana.

The participants are expected to complete the first two modules before arriving in Bloomington for the residential two-week program.

July 9 - 13: Online Distance Learning Modules

July 16-27: Hands-On Instruction in Bloomington, IN


Each participant selected for this program will receive:

  • Reimbursement of NCOLCTL Online Course fee ($150)
  • Accommodation for the two-week residential program.
  • $450.00 (maximum), travel reimbursement for out of town participants
  • A Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the program.

How to apply

Submit a completed Application Form with the following attached:

  1. Resume
  2. Statement of Purpose
  3. Two letters of recommendation indicating the importance of the training for the applicant. Send the following link to the supervisor to fill on your behalf for this purpose.

Note: One of the letters must be from the executive officer of the applicant's home department or African studies program or the Program's Language Coordinator.
