A Second Language Acquisition Certificate Program for African Language Instructors

The Summer Institute is a two-week NALRC intensive program that allows you to participate in a professional development workshop that focuses on the following themes:

  1. Using Standards-Based and Thematically Organized Backward Curriculum Design with Performance Assessment in the three Modes of Communication;
  2. Integrating Language, Culture, and Content in LCTL classrooms;
  3. Creating a Learner-Centered Classroom

2024 Program Dates:

Monday, 20th - Friday 31st, May 2024

Institute Format:

The 2024 NALRC Summer Institute will combine remote instructions with in-person practicum.

Week One (May 20 - 24)synchronous online instruction via Zoom. The instruction will focus on the principles and methods for quality instruction, curriculum, and assessments for African Languages, which will be applied in the second week. 

Week Two (May 28 - 31)in person at IU Bloomington. Participants will be immersed in intensive microteaching sessions.

Participation in the institute requires a commitment to completing both weeks of training.

Cost:

The Summer Institute is free and open to all current or future instructors of African languages and related less commonly taught languages. Preference will be given to those who have not attended the Institute before. In addition, all applicants must demonstrate a serious interest in African Language teaching.

The NALRC will cover the program fees (such as registration, administration, and instruction costs) for all selected applicants.

Participants will be responsible for their accommodation and lodging expenses. We encourage prospective participants to ask for support from their respective departments and language or area studies programs to cover expenses that NALRC will not cover.

Lunch, including tea and coffee, will be provided during the workshop.
